Peace Activism |
| April 4th, forty three years ago at Riverside Church in New York City, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his prophetic speech, Beyond Vietnam: A Time To Break Silence. Dr. King laid out his reasons for speaking against the Vietnam War and challenged the U.S. to undergo a radical revolution in values. He asked us to shift from a thing oriented society to a person oriented society.King was criticized for speaking out against the war. He was told that he should tend to the concerns of Black people and civil rights. The war was not his purview. Other civil rights leaders began to distance themselves from him.In tribute to Dr. King’s life United for Peace and Justice Network restates its stance in opposition U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We call for an end to U.S. expansion of war and threats of war. We call for the global abolition of nuclear weapons. We call for an increase in domestic human needs spending and cuts in the in military spending.Linking our current efforts to Dr. King’s legacy, on April 30 – May 1, UFPJ in partnership with hundreds of organizations from around the world is hosting a major international conference, For a Nuclear Free, Peaceful, Just and Sustainable World at the Riverside Church. This conference is part of the multi-faceted international Disarm Now! For Peace and Human Needs campaign.

As we continue our efforts to end the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and to redirect military spending to meet human and environmental needs, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) is working with hundreds of international and U.S. partner groups to bring pressure to bear on the U.S. and other nuclear powers to do more than just talk about a nuclear weapons-free future, but to create it. We need your help!
UFPJ helped initiate this dynamic and growing new movement for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Please support our ongoing efforts by making a donation to UFPJ.
Despite the global hopes raised by President Obama's Prague speech last spring, the Obama administration has recently requested the largest budget ever for nuclear weapons activities -- a 14% increase in spending for nuclear warheads in fiscal year 2011; a $5 billion increase over the next five years. In a time of twin global economic and environmental crises and growing competition over natural resources, the dangers of conflicts among nuclear-armed states are increasing. (Click here to download a report on the nuclear budget.) We can't afford to wait decades more for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
On the eve of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, thousands of people from around the world will gather in New York City for a weekend of inspiring and powerful activities to demand that President Obama and the leaders of the other nuclear-armed nations commence negotiations on a treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons within our lifetimes. Please join us for international conference, rally, march and peace and music festival, April 30 - May 2! |
